HAIR EXTENSION FAQ
Hand tied extensions are also known as wefts, and they are--you guessed it--tied by hand! The wefts are thin and flexible, allowing for a more natural look and more comfortable fit compared to traditional extensions. Typically, 4-7 wefts are installed on each row, and because of this, we can get very creative with color placement, as well as adding varying degrees of density. This also allows us to swap out wefts to alter the color over time-- think brightening your face-framing wefts at the start of summer. Hand-tied extensions are installed using a beaded sew-in method, where the wefts are sewn onto rows of microbeads that are attached to the client's natural hair.
Hand-tied extensions need to be moved up/tightened, every 5-12 weeks, depending on your hair density, texture, and lifestyle. Assuming proper at-home care and brushing is maintained (which I go over with you), removing the rows from your hair only takes 5-10 minutes. From that point, your natural hair is brushed out, releasing the buildup of hair trapped in the beads for those 6-12 weeks. We naturally shed about 100 hairs per day and when the beads are still attached, the hair shed has nowhere to go. This happens regardless of the extension method used, and is a completely natural part of the hair growth cycle. After brushing, we move on to the next step. If coloring is needed, we'll start with that before proceeding to the tightening. If no color is required, we'll begin by shampooing your natural hair and extensions in preparation for the tightening. Meanwhile, the stitching on the wefts is carefully cut apart for a clean reinstallation.Â
With proper at-home care and maintenance, your hair will achieve its peak shine and luster within the first 6 months. Many clients extend the lifespan of their hair, with some enjoying their set for up to a year, and even longer! Deciding when to replace hair for a fresh install varies from person to person. Single replacement wefts (swapping 2-4 wefts is most common) can always be interchanged to rejuvenate texture, length, and color in between new hair installations. This is especially beneficial for blondes looking to lighten and brighten wefts over time.Â
Absolutely! It typically takes about a week post-installation for hand-tied extensions to feel flexible enough to be flipped up into a high ponytail. However, a low ponytail can be worn immediately after installation. Unlike tapes, i-tips, or k-tips-- hand-tied extensions are inherently much more comfortable and undetectable in your pony because they are installed following the natural curvature of the head and the extensions mirror your natural hair from the seam to which they are attached to the head. There are no clumps or bumps or sticky pieces poking out. Just smooth wefts and hidden beads. Lastly, it is recommended to wear the ponytail either above or below the rows to avoid pulling of discomfort.Â
Yes. It is particularly important to wear it in a loose braid, or secure bun--especially when going underwater, as this will prevent tangling and matting. Chlorine from the pool or saltwater from the ocean are both extremely dehydrating for your natural hair, and your extensions are no exception. In fact, hair extensions require even more TLC simply due to the extensive manufacturing and hygienic processes they undergo during production. If you're a blonde, it is even more crucial to avoid submerging them underwater, as blonde extensions are much more vulnerable to discoloration and dehydration, which can leave them brassy, dry, and brittle. This is important to note for curly extensions as well, as curls are inherently drier and more sensitive. Protect your investment. If you do happen to go underwater, it is recommended to shampoo out the chlorine/saltwater with a sultfate-free and hydrating shampoo upon leaving the water for the day. Follow with a nourishing masque (like conditioner, but thicker) to restore balance.Â
It is not recommended to wash your entire head every day with extensions, regardless of method or type. Shampooing every 2-3 days is good, and every 3-4 days is even better. If your natural hair gets greasy easily, it is recommended to only wash the top of your head in between full shampoos. This is referred to as a "top-wash" and can be a lifesaver in terms of both saving time and effort, especially since the extensions maintain style much better than our natural hair. Excessive washing can dry out the extensions, cause color to fade faster, and allow the extensions to drop faster. For curly hair, a top-wash can also be beneficial! Following up, it is recommended to wet the extensions with a continuous spray bottle (reactivating the product in your hair) and using a wide tooth comb to refresh curls and safeguard against tangling. Gone are the days when we believed daily hair washing was necessary. Embrace the comfort in knowing that washing your hair less is beneficial, both for your extensions and your natural hair.Â
Hand-tied extensions are suitable for most hair types. Including straight, wavy, and various curly textures. We now have access to the most beautifully natural deep wavy and curly textures, though corkscrew curls may be more challenging to source. I work closely with my manufacturer to create custom curly options, tailoring each match based on photos of your natural hair. As someone with naturally curly hair myself, I spent years straightening it before these curly extensions options became available. Many people are told curly extensions don't exist--but now they do. With these options, you can wear extensions that air dry naturally, just as you would with your own curls. Embracing my natural texture has significantly improved my hair's health and amplified my morning routine, and now others can experience the same.Â
And these aren't just any curly extensions that have been permed or steam-treated--these are sourced from real curly-haired donors, meaning the hair is completely natural with no chemical or steam processing. This ensures they maintain their softness, bounce, and longevity without the tangling, matting, or issues common with processed alternatives.Â
It depends on what the final result of your new look is! There are three main options-- one, two or three rows. One row is ideal for anyone looking to add thickness and volume without significantly increasing length. In some cases, it may provide an additional one to two inches in length, but this depends on your natural hair's density and texture. If you're seeking a subtle, natural enhancement with the easiest transition to hand-tied extensions, one row is the perfect choice. Two rows are the most popular choice, offering the potential for a significant boost in both length and thickness, if you so choose. The addition of a second row provides greater flexibility in softening layers, ensuring seamless blending and a natural, fluid transition between your extensions and your own hair. Three rows are perfect for those seeking a maximum volume and glamorous, luxe look. This option is especially beneficial for those with shorter top layers, as the third row helps seamlessly blend the extensions into the natural hair, particularly around the sides. It's also the most common choice for curly textures, as the added fullness ensures a seamless blend with bouncy, voluminous layers inherent in curly hair.Â
Hand-tied extensions are one of the least damaging extension types available today. Unlike tape-ins, they eliminate the risk of adhesive pulling on your natural hair. Compared to keratin bonds (k-tips), they also reduce concerns about heat damage and the potential for tangling or matting as they grow out. The weight of hand-tied extensions is evenly distributed across multiple beads, minimizing tension and reducing the risk of traction alopecia associated with single-point attachment methods.
As with any salon service--including color or highlighting--there is always some level of responsibility in maintaining hair health. Choosing an experienced stylist with meticulous technique is key to ensuring a safe and seamless experience. Additionally, following your home-care routine and communicating any concerns with your stylist will help keep your natural hair in optimal condition.
The ideal candidate for hand-tied extensions has at least shoulder-length hair with layers no shorter than the cheekbone. While texture and density also play a significant role in achieving seamless blending, those with finer hair and longer layers have the most flexibility--allowing them to achieve nearly any look, from added volume to extended length. Fine hair effortlessly melts into the extensions, while longer layers provide the best foundation for natural movement and a flawless blend.Â
That said, having realistic expectations is key. While longer extensions may be tempting, they won't always blend well with shorter layers or thicker, blunt density. During your consultation, I'll guide you through these considerations to ensure we create the most natural and flattering result for your unique hair type. The beauty of extensions is that they not only enhance your current look but can also support hair growth and health, allowing you to achieve longer lengths over time in a way that aligns with your natural hair's integrity!
